The Bright Futures Scholarship

How to Apply:

Visit Florida Student Financial Aid to submit a completed, error-free Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) during your last year of high school, by graduation. You can start your application after October 1st of your senior year!

The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program is created to establish a lottery-funded scholarship program to reward any Florida high school graduate who merits recognition of high academic achievement.

The graduate must enroll in a degree program, certificate program, or applied technology program at an eligible Florida public or private postsecondary education institution, and remain enrolled without more than two semesters in lapse to continue receiving Bright Future funds.  Requirements for the Bright Future Program are subject to change with each Florida Legislative session, and the latest updates on the scholarship program can always be found at https://www.floridastudentfinancialaidsg.org

 REQUIREMENTS

Community Service

Community service is only a requirement for the Bright Futures Academic and Medallion Scholars Awards.

There is not a service hour requirement for graduation

In the event that you are trying to earn either of these awards, start working on your service hours ASAP. Service hours should be submitted on the Wolfson Community Service Log and must be signed off by the person responsible for supervising your work. Remember to make a copy for yourself and turn in the forms into your counselor. The recommended schedule to turn in your community service log is annually. Florida Academic Scholars requires 100 hours and Medallion Scholars requires 75 hours of non-paid service to the community through a non-profit organization. All service hours are due to your counselor no later than May of your graduation year.

What qualifies as Community Service?

The following guidelines can help you determine what counts for community service:

  • Service to a goverment agency

  • Service to a not-for-profit local, national or international organization

  • Service to a school or school organization

  • Service to a religious organization that does not include faith-spreading activities

Some ideas for community service include: Homeless Shelters, Food Banks, Beaches Cleanup, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, Public Libraries, and the Jacksonville Zoo.

Paid Work Hours
Students may combine paid work hours with community service hour requirements for each award. The student must fully meet the service hours and/or paid work hours requirements.
Effective August 15, 2022, students must complete the following when submitting paid work hours:
• Provide a copy of your employers’ payment documentation (paycheck stub or other official pay statements) reflecting the pay period dates, the number of hours worked, name of organization
• Supervisor’s name and contact information
• Complete and submit the “Paid-Work Hours” form to their School Counselor prior to graduation
Paid work hours must be of an official business that can be verified through the state or federal business registry.
