Writing your college essay

A Guide to

The essay is your time to shine!

It is an opportunity to tell the College about yourself and to bring you as a person to life as they read your essay. It is very important to tell them what makes you unique, what passions you have, and why you would be an asset to their College.

The Common App essay prompts tend to be very broad and can be answered in many different ways and directions. When answering, make sure to include:

  • Who I am now

  • Why I need to go to this university

  • What future plans I have to impact the world

Essays should not be a repeat of your resume. But rather, essays should be a more detailed explanation or story using specific examples from one of your leadership or work experiences, community service events, clubs, activities, athletic teams, youth group, and more. Tell them a story about you! Show them your passion. They can be humorous, insightful, demonstrate key lessons learned, detail your future aspirations – anything that lets them learn about you and all you have to offer to their program.

Remember to PROOFREAD your essay! Have many eyes read your essay to ensure it is college ready. Your parents, your teacher, your mentor, your coach, your club sponsor, your employer, or whoever you would like can proofread for spelling, grammatical errors, and typos. Make sure you have the correct college name that you are applying to in the essay! For more advice see this article from the Princeton Review.
